In the poem “Station,” by Eamon Grennan, the poet uses contrast between light and dark to illustrate the father’s, the narrator, mixed feelings. In the poem, the father is happy that his son is all grown up that he can be independent and that his son will experience a whole new adventure that is laid ahead of him. “I can see when the light is right, his next life in bright first touches.” On the other hand, the father is also sad to let his son go out into the society at the same time because their father-son relationship will not be the same never again. “I want to tell him he’s entering into the light of the world… as he leaves one home, one parent for another, and we both know it won’t ever be the same again.” There fore, the father is happy and proud to see his son all grown up to go out into the society to start the journey of himself but at the same time, the father is also sad because he knows that their relationship will never be the same again.

One of the most tiring, but exciting experience I have ever had was getting lost in a mountain covered with snow for more than twelve hours. When I was going to high school in New Zealand, the school decided to take all the Form Fours, or grade 10s, which included me, to a mountain called Mt. Whanganui, which is located on the northern island of New Zealnd. It was winter and the mountain we went for hiking, was famous for ski courses- since there was no other on the island. When we got there, I could see the valleys of the mountain covered with whit powders which made them look like white sand hills. We all brought our skiis or snowboards so we can have fun after hiking. Some people left their skiis in the bus but me and my friends; Chad, Sam, Michael and Chris, figured that we would have a lot more time to ski if we take them with us.

We set off around 10 A.M and was planning to come back at least by three in the afternoon. However, there was a little problem in our little group. We got lost on the way up the mountain for about twelve hours. We walked around on the mountain, trying to find at least a way back to the place we started off. Instead of going to the starting spot, we went in a log cabinet owned by a farmer and slept there. The next morning, we woke up surrounded by local police officers and search and rescue team. Fortunately we did not freeze to death but went back home safely.

It was 10 A.M when we set off. Me and my friends started to regret for not leaving our skiis in the bus after an hour of hiking with skiis and snowboards. It was around 12 A.M when we had lunch on the snow. We were all tired, covered with our own sweat and most importantly, we had no energy left within us to carry on. From then, we, me and my friends and others who were stupid enough to bring their skiis like us, began falling behind from others. A teacher or two would wait for us to make sure we don’t get lost, leaving clear footsteps behind that leads the way. I thought this was ridiculous because there is no way we are going to get lost when there was nothing that was tall enough to block our sight to see others. But, I was wrong.

It was 4 P.M when the darkness came. It’s when we realized that night comes early in the mountains especially when a group of clouds, containing snow, come. When the clouds blocked th sun, the temperature started cool down rapidly, the wind started to blow and snow began coming down. Strong winds carried snow which hit us like bullets. Those snow may not had been as lethal as real bullets they use in a war but it still hit us bad. By then, our face was red from cold and hitting of the snow and where ever the snow was on our body, they frosted and did not melt away. At some point then, we noticed that the wind had dug up the foot prints, snow had covered the traces and darkness forbaded our eye sights. We were lost.

”God damn it! I told you, I told you guys to just leave our damn skiis in the bus! I knew something like this was coming. What are we going to do now?” Chad, the loudest of us all, cursed and asked Sam what we should do. Sam was like our leader that time because of his confidence. “Don’t know. Maybe we should go back to that ranch we just saw about two hours ago and call the teachers from there.” So we started going back to where we came from. Well, at least we thought we were. However, three hours of walking, we still couldn’t see anything. What’s worse was that Chad was whining about how it’s a mistake that we brought our skiis, we were going to freeze to death and that we were going to the wrong direction. Once in a while we would yell at Chad, ”Shut up! Chad,” but Chad’s talkativity overwhelmed us. However, Chad was right about one thing. We were going to the wrong direction. We were supposed to head west but we were actually walking towards west, towards the mountain.

By 10P.M we were so hungry that our stomach were screaming so we sat under a big tree which blocked the snowy wind for us and got fire going so we can have a cup of soup. We learnt that this was a bad idea. A minute later the snow on the branches were melting and soon after we noticed that, boom! Snow on the branches fell on us. There was snow everywhere, inside our socks, hoods, jackets and even in our under wears. To make it worse, the wind never let us to dry.

Somehow we made our way to the old log cabinet with out freezing to death. When we knocked on the door, no one answered. We knocked couple of more times and there still was no answer. We found that the door was opened so we let ourselves in. There was a fire stove going on, which we dried our clothes and laid our feet on to thaw our frozen feet. Our feet were frozen so badly that we couldn’t feel the warmth of the fire until we burnt our socks. The pain of thawing proccess came later. It was about 4 A.M when we went to sleep in the cabinet.

The next morning Chad woke me up. When I woke up I found that the local police officers and my school dean were surrounding us. They said that they had looked for us all night but couldn’t find us so the teachers called the local police station for search and rescue. It was the owner who had called the police because he saw eight men lying in his cabinet so he figured we were thieves. The police knew it was us, the eight students, because our school dean asked the police to find us.

After that, me and my friends all got grounded- for what!?- for being stupid to carry the skiis while hiking I guess. I never went for another mountain hiking after that, but for sure, it is an unforgettable experience.

For the environmental means, the story sets in a winter time where a storm is about to struck the region. One can hardly see a living thing outside the window of a house for the houses are at least five miles away from each other. This physical setting of the environment is important because it affects the emotions of the characters and it also gives the readers hints to think about how the characters in the story would feel. Not only that, the environmental backgrounds can be used to bring out issues. The emotional or, mental settings of the characters are also important too. In this story, the mental setting of the main character, Anne, was nervous, fragile, bored, furious, and indifferent. These mental settings tell the readers that Anne is tired of her life and that her emotion is so fragile.

This is not my day. I could tell that right off the bat when I was asked by the chief officer to cover for Rome- one of my toughest colleague cop that usually got to petrol the toughest sector of the town. So here I am, in this town of gangsters and thugs on my precious weekend. I heard that most of the people in this part of the town had at least been in jail once and that they all carry drugs and weapons. I can’t believe I am wondering around this part of town, the most dangerous part of the town, with no one to back me up but my 45 caliber pistol, which I am not really permitted to use. I better find a spot where it’s less dangerous, still dangerous but less, and is free from the sight of those who hate cops. Just not to get into troubles. My day had been tiring- not that I was patrolling hard to find if there’s any problem but trying hard not to be sighted. Tried to pretend that I didn’t see what I had seen, a group of thugs gathered around and kept beating on one old drugged guy who kept mumbling, pretended as if I did not see drug dealers buying and selling drugs because that’s what I was told to do. My colleague cops say it is like carrying hay into a burning house to interfere with the lives of this neighborhood. At first when I heard what I was told to do so, I felt a certain guilt and sorry for those people who live in the boundary of the law but has no money to live somewhere else. I asked one of the elder cops “So we just sit there, doing nothing?” but when I heard the reply, I found myself nodding. He said, “Come on, think. Do you think we really don’t wanna help those people? It’s just like that keeping is harder than stealing or one hand can’t match ten other hands. You know we are running short on units and beside, what can we do if we are outnumbered. We can’t use guns.” That was the end of the argument but still, I felt like I had a feeling that I have to do something. Even by myself. Now this scared me because I thought I might do something stupid when I am out there patrolling. It is 8 P.M, which means I only have to stay in this place for not longer than an hour. I have held my rage patiently so nothing happened- to me, that is. I feel really guilty toward the people I couldn’t help today but I was told to stay out of… wait! Is that a Merc!? A new full-optioned series? In this kind of neighborhood? “I better follow that guy and see what I can do.” I started to follow the Benz without him noticing that I was following. Of course, I was told to stay out of the trouble because then it would be like a lit splint of wood thrown to a room full of gas but, I don’t mind. I am a cop damn it! My job is not to ignore criminals but to catch them so everyone else can live safely. The adrenalines flooded and I could feel that something was coming when the driver of the benz get out of the car. Just as I expected, he did not quite look like a person who owns a luxurious car like merc. He was unshaven, he was wearing a whit plain t-shirt and a plain jean which I figured even I could afford to buy with my weekly wage. When I saw the guy walking toward the people who I doubt were mobs, I was sure that the driver was a gang member like the people he was walking to. I got out of the car, the pistol in my hand, then I shouted “Freeze!” He looked surprised and afraid for a second and a moment later, he looked relived which I found weird. I was not so sure about why he was so confident so I laid my finger on the trigger and got ready to take him down if he makes another move but then I saw him putting his hand in the pocket and without realizing my finger pressed the trigger before my brain could even function.

In the story, Chris is a dreamer in two different extents; he set his goals so unachievable for him, and he is a dreamer also because he lived in an imaginative world of his own. Another character trait of Chris is ‘lonely.’ First of all, Chris is a dreamer because he set his goal far too higher than he could ever reach. For instance, when Chris stayed at Vanessa’s grandparent’s house through out his high school years, he told Vanessa that he would become an engineer who constructs bridges by attending at a college in Winnipeg. “What [Chris] [is] going to be is an engineer…Winnipeg, to college.” He said it with such an assurance that sounded like he really was going to do what he said. However, it was impossible for him to neither become an engineer nor go to a college because he had no support- money.Further more, Chris is a dreamer in another extent. He dreamt through his life. He made an imaginative world of his own that is free from the ‘depression of the world’s and his own.’ For example, he told Vanessa how beautifully decorated his house was and how wonderful his horses are in his ranch when there were actually nothing beautiful or wonderful about the place he lived. He lived in his own world and ‘let on’ every depressing incident. “…the children stabbed and sniveled… Chris began asking [Vanessa] about Manawaka then, as though nothing were going on around him.”Lastly, Chris was alone through out the story. He had no one to support him both financially and emotionally. For instance, although his grandfather paid for Chris’ room and board while he was attending high school, but the grandfather did his share without joy nor did he care whether Chris could go to a college or not. Chris was also alone in which he had no one to share his problem and get advices that he asked a serious life turning question, the question that whether he would join the army or not, to a thirteen-year old girl. “[Chris] must have understood perfectly well how impossible it would be, with a thirteen-year-old. But there was no one else. All his life’s choices had grown narrower and narrower.”Therefore, Chris is a dreamer is a dreamer in two different extent; he dreamt of becoming someone who he could have never been and he lived in the world of his dream. Not only that, he was also lonely.

He also uses a situational irony to twist the ending of the story. There are so many symbols in the story that readers’ eyes are bombarded by waves of symbols; the gothic castle, colors of rooms and the gong of the clock. The daunting gothic castle may symbolize the symmetry where the prince and his friends walked in and locked themselves up. The high walls of the castle could mean the cowardice of prince for fleeing away from the disease or it could also mean the indifference of prince that he has towards his suffering people of his country. The dark red or scarlet color of the room may stand for blood, or even death. The gong of the clock, which repeats on an hour basis, symbolizes the time people have left before their death. The prince and his friends were daunted by the sound of the clock, expecting something terrible to happen, but not knowing what it is exactly. “…at each lapse of an hour, the musicians of the orchestra were constrained to pause… it was observed that the giddiest grew pale…” The author used deep red or black colors, which represent blood and death mostly, and gothic castles to set up a frightening mood that tells the reader that there is going to be a horrifying incident. The irony of the story is a situational irony because as readers reach toward the end of the story, they are unlikely to predict the same ending as actual the ending of the story. The irony, is that the prince and his friends locked themselves away from the rest of the population to keep away from disease but the avatar of the Red Death itself came to kill them.
